Swimming with a New Tattoo

Question: How Long Do I Have to Wait To Go Swimming After Getting a Tattoo?Answer: Tattoos should be allowed to heal for a minimum of 2 weeks - until all flaking and peeling is finished and all scabs have fallen off. Even then, you're taking a risk getting in a chemically treated pool or bacteria-infested pond or lake, especially if you stay for an extended period of time. A tattoo is not considered fully healed until a new layer of protective skin has grown over it - this process usually takes about 3 months. Until then, your tattoo is most vulnerable to all elements - bacteria, sun, chemicals, pollution, etc. This is why getting a tattoo during the summer is not recommended, especially for swimmers and beach bunnies! If you've already got the tattoo, all I can really recommend now is stay out of the pool for at least 2 weeks and then keep your swimming to a minimum if you absolutely must go, and make sure you clean your tattoo thorougly after getting out of the water. If you can hold out for the full 3 month perdiod, you'll be doing your new tattoo a great service and I guarantee that it will have been worth the sacrifice. if(zSbL

We appreciated all of the internals and overseas tattoo artists attending to the convention. Notes: Since nearly 20 years we run our South-West-Tattoo-Studio in the city of Mainz and after we heard that a local concert organizer (!!!) tried to come up with a Tattoo-Convention, we decided to better organize a renowned Tattoo-Convention ourselves on a level, which is adequate to the Tattoo-Convention Frankfurt which we organize since 19 years with great success. The location 'Congress-Centrum Rheingoldhalle', located near the river Rhine in the heart of the city of Mainz, is perfectly suitable for visitors and exhibitors. Sparing neither trouble nor expense we will make over time the event in Mainz well as established and successful as the Convention in Frankfurt. There is more than only hope that we will be able to welcome for the prelude in Mainz more than 150 tattoo-artists from around the globe, including approx. 30 traders, we have of course communicated with and were met with great acceptance. Two or three months away from the Expo-Start we will publish a complete list of all exhibitors on our website, where you can see for yourselves who is coming. We also are in contact with scene-celebrities and do our best to present a well known star-guest. Like in Frankfurt we will of course present a huge supporting program, including live-bands, shows and as a matter of course the Tattoo-Competition awards. The city of Mainz is not only attractive for tattoo-fans, since the historic city-center with its impressive dome is just a short walk away from the event-location and always worth a trip. For those who are coming with their own cars there is a underground parking lot below the exhibition hall. There are stops for busses and railways at the hall too and even ships are mooring directly at the 'Rheingoldhalle in which you find hotels and casinos. We truly think that the whole location offers everything which is needed for a successful event. Tattoo-Collegues and traders which are considering to participate in the 1st. Tattoo-Expo-Mainz and want to register a booth can have a more detailed look on the location and more informations by visiting www.ccmainz.de. Of course picture galleries will be provided after the event, maybe with your own tattoos! Registration forms will be sent out to all on our mailing list at the end of this year. Tattoo Symbol Meanings - Pt 3

When I started this research on the subject of symbols, the first thing I looked into was ancient history. I am most fascinated by the symbols used in different cultures as ways of telling stories, recording events and basic communication. When you study Egyptian hieroglyphs, very little is told about the artist that drew them. But without the artists, the pictoral historians, we would know virtually nothing about these cultures.

The same is true today. One day, our modern society will be studied as ancient history. And the symbols used in our lives today will intrigue and teach the future generations. Look upon these symbols with new eyes, and appreciate them for their depth, beauty and significance. If one of them inspires you as the perfect design for a tattoo, you can be assured you have chosen something very special.

Egyptian Hieroglyphs Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs
If you really want to go on a historical expedition, start digging here. This online Egyptology lesson is only for the very serious. This complicated but beautiful form of ancient writing will help you to understand much more than symbolism.

Celtic Symbolism

Adinkra/West African Symbols Adinkra Symbology
About's guide to African History, Alistair Boddy-Evans, describes Adinkra as "a cotton cloth produced in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire which has traditional Akan symbols stamped upon it." However, as he points out, they are much more than pictures. Discover what these simple yet beautiful designs mean to the people that use them. Native American/Indian/Aboriginal/Tribal Native American Symbol Dictionary
Here is a very nice collection of basic drawings used by ancient Native Americans. These items are commonly found on pottery, in jewelry and on clothing.Sacred Symbols & Their Meanings
This page is extremely informative and covers many aspects of tribal beliefs. Here you will find symbols and meanings of the Great Circle of Life, the representation of the ritual pipe, the significance of plants, animals, people and trees and much more. A really excellent resource.Sacred Stones
These stones are not ancient, they are not part of any sacred ritual, and they've only been around for a few years and were created by one individual with a vision. However, it is interesting and it might inspire you with ideas if you are looking for something to symbolize a oneness with nature.

Nautical History Pirate Flags
Even pirates are part of our history! Pirate symbols still inspire many a tattoo today. The "Jolly Roger" is the most famous, but there were other symbols also used to deceive or threaten their victims.

Family Crest & Coat of Arms Symbols Common Symbols List
No pictures, but the names of the symbols are given along with their meanings. See how a coat of arms can tell the story of family history.

How a Tattoo is Applied

If you are thinking about getting your first tattoo, but are unfamiliar with the process, the thought might meet you with anticipation. Fear of the unknown can sometimes hold us back from doing things we really want to do. You might be concerned that it will hurt too much. You might be worried that you wouldn't know if the artist was doing something wrong.

The best thing you can do is educate yourself on the process of the tattoo application, and that way you will be prepared and know what to expect when you sit in the artist's chair. So, how is a tattoo applied to the skin? From start to finish, this article will tell you exactly how the human skin is transformed into a beautiful work of art.

Please keep in mind that the following outline describes the most favorable situation for getting a tattoo. There will always be differences between one artist and the next, but any major deviance from these guidelines could indicate a problem.

Once you have decided on your tattoo design and your artist, you will be required to show valid identification for proof of age. You may also be asked for your address and phone number, so your artist can contact you in the future if need be. In most studios, payment must be made before services are rendered. It is up to each studio to decide which methods of payment they accept. Whatever method you pay with, make sure they give you a receipt.

Foot Tattoo Pain and Healing

Some of my friends think I’m a little crazy for getting different tattoo and piercing procedures just for the benefit of the experience and having personal information to share with my readers. I suppose it may seem a bit extreme to have holes punctured in you for the sake of an article, but my most recent experience reminded me why I do it. There is a big difference between understanding something “in theory,” and having a hands-on experience to substantiate that general knowledge.

I know tattoos and I know tattoo pain, but until the other day I had no idea how a foot tattoo compared. I was aware that it was going to be very painful and I knew my foot was going to swell. I was prepared with all the usual things I prepare myself with before a tattoo – gum, music, food on board, drink in hand, something to read and my bottle of Bactine spray. I was admittedly a little nervous, but ready.

Now, I’ve gotten very painful tattoos before. The one on my chest was very difficult to sit through and I had to do Lamaze breathing exercises through parts of it just to endure it. So, I have experience in pain and getting my foot inked couldn’t possibly be any worse than that, right? (Insert sarcastic remark here.)

Well, the first line told me I was in trouble. Not just because it hurt, but because I felt this irresistible urge to flinch. Kind of a knee-jerk reaction to the nerves being poked and prodded all along the top of my foot. The more Kym tattooed, the harder it became to keep myself from flinching. The more I resisted, the more I tensed up. The more I tensed up, the more painful the tattoo became. Even the Bactine didn’t take the edge off this time like it usually does.

I would say that the first hour of the tattoo was painful and annoying due to the flinching I finally had to give in to. Fortunately, Kym is a fantastic artist and just kept working despite my involuntary movement and none of her lines got messed up. The remaining half hour it took for her to finish the tattoo was pure agony. How I sat through it is beyond me – all I could do was watch so I could see how freaking amazing it looked and reminded myself that it would all be worth it in the end. How right I was!

My sugar skull is absolutely beautiful and I love it. Healing has been annoying – I’m on day four now and this is the first time I’ve been able to put my weight on my foot without causing it to feel like it might pop like an over-filled balloon because of the swelling. I’ve had my foot elevated for the most part of the last three days and have been applying ice packs as often as possible. Being laid up and unable to get outside or just engage in normal activities has been extremely frustrating, especially since we’re finally having some nice weather. But, it’s all worth it and sacrificing a few days for a lifetime of beautiful ink is a small price to pay.

But it’s not entirely over just yet because this tattoo isn’t finished. We’ve decided to add some old school roses to it, plus I still have the other foot to do. After watching me hobble around and grimace in pain the past few days, my best friend is starting to question my sanity since I told her I still have every intention of finishing what I started. Am I a masochist? Obviously not, because I have derived no pleasure from this pain whatsoever. I’m just a body art devotee who thinks the end result is the only thing that matters. Pain is temporary and it just makes us appreciate our ink even more.

Dragon Art for Tattoo Ideas

Dragons have long been the fascination of man, be they real or fantasy. They have become the subject of brilliant stories of bravery, heroism and love. Some adventures point to the dragon as being the villain, ravaging cities and devouring innocents. Others make the dragon out to be the hero, saving the lives of many from some other heinous beast. Whether you see yourself as the dragon or the slayer, you probably have some kind of fond connection with these tales as many of us do. Dragons have also become a popular subject for tattoos. Just as with any other kind of tattoo design, finding just the right one for you is the key. Before you can do that, the question to be asked is: What kind of dragon are you?

To answer that, you have to become familiar with the many different types of dragons. There are Western dragons, usually associated with being evil, being able to fly and breathe fire. Eastern dragons, on the other hand, are usually noted for being good, lucky, wingless guardians of nature. Even among these two main types of dragon, though, there are many variations.

It can take a lot of research learning about the different types of dragons to find one that fits your own personality. Remember that no one is going to judge you for the dragon you choose - even if Eastern dragons are supposed to be evil, it doesn't mean you are if you choose one for its beauty. Here are a few places that can get you started in your search:

Dragons of Legend This site goes into extensive detail on the history of many different dragons, both Western and Eastern. With the use of pictures of ancient dragon art to more modern examples, it is a great way to get a clear sense of the ancient beliefs that started these legends.

Pictures and Galleries of Dragons

Now that you've decided what kind of dragon you are looking for, you'll want to browse through pictures to get an idea of how you want it to look. There is an abundance of dragon images on the Net, but sifting through them to find the best ones isn't easy. I've selected some of the best collections I have found to share with you here.

Karate Dragon Clip Art They call it clipart - I call it FLASH! These black and white drawings of Eastern dragons are perfect for use as tattoo designs. In this collection, you'll find 185 fabulous dragon images to choose from. The images are also large enough to show excellent detail and will be easy for any artist to adjust to your liking.

Karate Dragon Clip Art - Page 2 If the 185 images above wasn't enough for you, here's 84 more. Just as excellent as the other gallery, these simple outline drawings are as good as flash!

Dragon Pictures 180 of some of the most beautiful Western dragon art you can find. You can choose to view them at either high or low resolution. These images include digital imagery and fine art, some of which you may have seen on posters and t-shirts.

Remember, whatever dragon you choose is your decision. I hope these help to give you inspiration as you search for the perfect design. Always keep in mind that no tattoo has to be exactly like the original drawing. If you see 2, 3 or 10 pictures that you would like combined into one, a true tattoo artist will be able to do this for you. Also keep in mind that some of the full color art images are much too detailed to be replicated exactly as a tattoo, but they can be done very similar to the original with a little adjustment by your artist.

Tattoo Certification

My nephew, 26, is determined that he will be a tattoo artist. He has been hanging out in a friend's tattoo shop in NC. His mom died recently and he is asking us for help to get him started, i.e. buy needles, etc. My question is... don't you need a license yourself to do tattoos? He says you don't. He said the health department came in, asked questions about standards, etc. I can't imagine that my nail tech needs to go to school, get a certificate to do my nails and the guy tatooing me doesn't need one. My nephew says the owner has a certificate and he doesn't need one himself.Answer: Depending on state laws, it is very possible that your nephew does not need a license. It's true that in most states, it is only required for the studio to have certification, not the artists that work there. The reason for this is because there is no formal training for learning how to tattoo that is regulated by the government. Because of that, they cannot require that anyone provide proof of training. However, some states do require that the artists at least be certified in blood borne pathogens, but that is not the case in all states.

So, it's up to the individual to have enough sense not to go into this business without proper training. Unfortunately, that is why my site and the work I do is necessary - because too many people do not care about that and put their customers at risk. And there are too many companies out there selling tattoo equipment to anyone with money, which only perpetuates the problem.

If your nephew really wants to make it in this business, he has to be trained. That is usually done through an apprenticeship. If he has a friend in the business, maybe his friend will (or is already) training him. I can't imagine that his friend, who owns a shop and will no doubt care about his reputation, would allow your nephew to just start tattooing clients without any experience. If your nephew is serving an actual apprenticeship with his friend, and he simply needs starter equipment to begin practicing (apprentices usually practice on pig skin, fruit, etc.), but you should talk to him about exactly what he is needing and why. If it's because he wants to start tattooing people from home, that is very dangerous and also very disrespectful to his friend.

Does your nephew have artistic skill? Is he the kind of guy that's always sitting around drawing or painting? If that's the case, he may be a very good candidate to be a successful tattoo artist. However, if he thinks he wants to do this because he thinks it's cool, glamorous, or that he can rake in tons of money - he's setting himself up for disappointment. A few artists make big money in this business, and the rest of them are struggling day to day just like anyone else.

Since his mother just died and I'm sure he's hurting, it's probably a really good idea that he immerse himself in something expressive and artistic, as long as he does it properly. If he has artistic skill, he deserves a chance. Just make sure he's doing this the right way. I have a couple of articles you may want to share with him: What Makes a Good Tattoo Artist. How to Become a Tattoo Artist. How to get an Apprenticeship.

Tattoo Removal Options

There are a lot of reasons for possibly wanting a tattoo removed – the positive element of tattoo removal is that you are no longer burdened with a tattoo you seriously regret. If a tattoo is holding you back from getting a job you want or keeps you from attaining goals you have set for yourself, a little pain and scarring may be worth it to you. If you have a gang-related tattoo and are no longer associating yourself with that gang or any gang (good for you!), it would be in your best interests to have it removed. If you have a tattoo that symbolizes hate or prejudice, I hope that you will decide that it is time to let it go. If you are wearing a tattoo of a past love and now you have a new special person in your life, it would be unkind to your new love NOT to get rid of the old tattoo.

If you have a tattoo that you wish to have partially or completely removed, you should first consider your options and decide which method might be best for you.

Laser Removal
Today, lasers are the most common method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments, which are then cleared away the your own immune system. However, this isn’t all done with just one treatment. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate to destroy the ink. But, the more treatments you have, the more damage you do to your skin, causing painful blisters and scabs that can eventually lead to scarring. Experts in removal therapy say that technology has advanced to the point where scarring is minimal, sometimes non-existant, but this can vary depending on the situation.

On top of being physically painful (it has been described as feeling like being splattered with hot grease), laser removal can be painful to your wallet as well. Depending on your tattoo, you may need anywhere from 1-10 sessions, each costing in the range of $250-$850 per session. A large, professional tattoo in color could cost thousands of dollars to remove, and the effectiveness of the removal still isn’t guaranteed.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, or IPL, is a dermal enhancer currently being used in some spas. Instead of laser light, it uses high intensity light in pretty much the same manner. A gel is applied to the skin and then a wand is used to emit pulses of light onto the skin area being treated. This method is said to be less painful and more effective than traditional laser therapy, but there are many tattoo removal experts who do not recommend IPL. Even if it does work a little better, the bad news is that it also carries a heftier price tag – one clinic offering a price of $10 per pulse. Depending on how many pulses per session your tattoo requires, this could add up to a significant amount of money.

Other Medical Methods
There are other methods of tattoo removal, but most of them are so painful and ineffective that laser removal replaced them as soon as it became available. These other methods include dermabrasion, which would actually “sand” away the top layer of skin through abrasive friction. Another method is excision, where the tattoo would be cut away and the skin sewn back together. These methods have proved to cause much damage to the skin and result in severe scarring, and are only used today in extreme cases where laser surgery is not an option.

Do-It-Yourself Cream Removals
I have not personally tested any of the at-home cream removal methods I have seen advertised – even the ones that appear right here on this website. Honestly, I would not expect a whole lot from them. However, the Tattoo Removal Institute (which I am suspicious of being connected with Tat B Gone, but I can’t prove it yet) states that they have tested a few of these products, and found a couple of them to live up to their claims. According to their research, both TatBGone and Tattoo-OFF did show significant fading of the tattoos without any pain or damage to the skin. I am still very skeptical, but if you really need a tattoo removed and don’t have the money for surgery, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try one or both of these products. It’s not chump change, though – a 2 month supply of Tat B Gone is $125, and it takes several months to get the desired results, according to the Tattoo Removal Institute. A 2 month supply of Tattoo-OFF is $116.95. So, it isn’t inexpensive by any means, but certainly a lot more affordable than laser surgery. But before you shell out any money for these products, you might want to read some of the comments that have been sent in by people who have tried them. (next page)

Tattoo Beginner's Guide

So, you've decided to get a new tattoo. That's great! Maybe this is your first, or your fifth, but usually when we go to get inked, we naturally have questions. Especially if this is your first time, I'm sure you have a lot of anxiety over the whole thing, same as I did.

Yes, I have tattoos! I get that question a lot, so if you'd like to see the ink I currently have, you can take a look at my tattoos. So, needless to say, I was once a newbie, feeling the vibration and the sting of the needle against my skin for the first time.

I try to never forget my first experience, and how nervous I was when I first started thinking about getting a tattoo. I had so many questions, and no one could seem to answer them to my satisfaction. The answers I got only led me to more questions. I was told to make sure my artist used an autoclave...what the heck is that? And I read somewhere that the machine and clipcord should be covered with plastic...the whoosywhatsit? I started realizing I had so very much to learn before I was going to let anyone touch my skin with that noisy little contraption.

The more I learned, the more I loved. I became engrossed in all body art had to offer, and decided it was something I wanted to be on the inside circle of, not just a passerby. I wasn't satisfied with the idea of just getting a tattoo anymore - I wanted to learn more about the actual process and how to do them myself. As I entered my apprenticeship, I discovered a information I never saw from the outside.

I decided to make it my personal mission to share this information with everyone I come in contact with that has even had a fleeting thought of getting a tattoo. I want to preserve the longevity and respect of an artform to be truly admired, not feared. But in order to do that, people need to be educated on how to keep themselves safe, and how to identify the difference between a good tattooist and a bad one. My beginner's guide is part of my mission of spreading that information. Please don't keep this information to yourself. Pssst...pass it on!

Tattoo Aftercare - Foot

Not all tattoos are created equal, and neither are the methods required to heal them properly. Tattoo aftercare instructions are usually one general set of rules, but some tattoos require specific care. Foot tattoos are one of the most difficult to heal for some, and others shy away from getting a foot tattoo because they’re afraid it will be a horrible experience. This article will help you overcome those obstacles. I have both of my feet tattooed, and trust me – it was worth a few days of pain and a few weeks of inconvenience.

Timing is Everything
Proper tattoo aftercare sometimes requires sacrifice. Once you get a foot tattoo, wearing shoes is off limits for at least a couple of weeks. That means you probably won’t want to get it done in the middle of winter. There are two major reasons why shoes are bad for a healing tattoo: One is that the shoe creates friction against the surface of the foot, which can cause irritation or even remove some of the ink and leave you with a faded tattoo. The other major problem is that it suffocates the tattoo, building up sweat and not allowing it to breathe. The combination of sweat, irritation and lack of air is the perfect environment for bacteria and infection.

If you have a job or participate in activities that require you to wear restrictive shoes every day, then a foot tattoo might not be a good idea - unless you can do it during vacation time when you have at least two weeks to keep the shoes off.

Timing also has to be considered if you’re a swimmer. You have to be able to stay out of the water for at least two weeks, so you'd need to work that around your swimming schedule. The same applies to vacationers and lifeguards who sit in the sun and could be called to enter the water, both of which are bad on any new tattoo.

Size Matters
The size of your tattoo will have a direct effect on how painful your foot will feel after getting tattooed. If you’re just getting something small like the size of a large coin or less, your healing will probably be pretty easy as long as you keep it clean and try not to wear shoes for a couple of weeks. On the other hand, if you’re getting something larger that spans across a good portion of your foot, that’s when you’ll really need to pay attention to this article.

One Foot, Two Foot
If you plan on getting both feet tattooed, don’t do them both at the same time. You’ll want to have at least one foot that isn’t in pain to hobble around with. Once any major swelling and pain has subsided, then you can go ahead and get work done on the other foot. My feet each needed two sessions to complete, so I went back and forth between them, but you could also just wait until one is complete and then begin the other foot. It’s up to you.

Red Foot, Blue Foot
Some swelling and minor bruising is to be expected for the first few days after getting tattooed. It may not hurt much the day of the tattoo, but the following day can be rather brutal. Even if it doesn’t hurt, you should go home and immediately apply ice to your tattoo after you leave the shop. Put your feet up and read, play video games; whatever it takes to distract you from wanting to get up and move about too much. That will start you off on….cough…the right foot. (ha) If you insist on being up and about after getting your foot inked, you’re likely going to pay dearly for it the next day. I don't recommend washing or applying any ointments to your tattoo on this first day. Just give it some time to calm down; if you went to a clean, reputable artist, then they already washed it and applied ointment before sending you out the door and you’ll be fine until the following morning.

Easy Does It
When it’s time to start washing your foot tattoo, it’s important to be gentle. Using only your hand, apply a small amount of mild cleanser (non-scented, chemical-free) to the tattoo and slowly work the cleanser into the tattoo with a circular motion. Rinse with cool water. While you’re washing your tattoo, you may feel something slimy on the surface – that’s plasma, and you’ll want to be sure that it’s completely gone before you’re finished washing. Keep applying cool water and making circular motions with your hand until you don’t feel the slippery plasma anymore. If you don’t, the plasma dries on the surface of your skin like scabs and it can be very painful.

Once your tattoo is clean, you’ll need to apply something to keep it moist – either ointment or lotion. It’s pretty much a matter of preference as long as you make sure whatever you use doesn’t have any fragrances or harsh chemicals. The presence of petrolatum as an ingredient has been debated for years on whether or not it can actually draw ink away from the tattoo. My personal experience and observances make me believe that a small amount of petrolatum is okay (straight petroleum jelly, however, isn’t) and that it’s the overuse of such products that usually cause the problem. People tend to want to slather the stuff on way too thick, and that’s when ink loss is experienced. So, this is my rule for ointment/moisturizer application: apply a thin coat, rub in well with your fingers, and then take a clean paper towel and dab off whatever remains. Your tattoo shouldn’t look glossy when you’re done.

Pump It Up
Swelling in the feet is usually due to water retention and poor circulation. People who carry extra weight or have a disorder that slows the circulation of blood have the highest risk of severe foot swelling. Drink lots of water (at least a gallon a day) and your body will allow you to flush the water instead of storing it. Feel free to elevate your feet and apply ice as needed – you may need to do this for an hour a day for a week, and that’s okay.

Even while you’ve got your feet elevated, it’s important to maintain good circulation. Proper blood flow and oxygen distribution plays a huge role in how quickly your tattoo will heal. Do leg pumps, leg lifts, crunches, arm lifts and anything else you can do to get your heart beating even while reclining.

When To Be Concerned
Swelling, redness, bruising, and pain are all normal for foot tattoos during the first few days. If it hasn’t subsided after four or five days, or if it did subside but then became painful and swollen again, it might be time to see a doctor. Foot tattoos are so prone to bacterial invasion – they’re low to the ground and come in contact with huge concentrations of bad germs. If your feet don’t get good circulation, a small infection could turn bad very quickly. A visit to the doctor – even if you don’t have insurance – will cost you a lot less than a visit to the hospital later on.

Three is the Magic Number
It takes three months for the human skin to completely restore itself after being tattooed. During that time, it builds up millions of cells that cover over the ink that’s been implanted underneath. Until that process is finished, your tattoo is vulnerable. After those first two critical weeks, you can begin to wear shoes when needed but you still need to baby your tattoo. Get the shoes off as soon as possible and then wash and treat the tattoo immediately. Keep it out of the sun as much as possible, and apply strong sunblock if you do need to expose your feet to the elements. Friction and UV rays can still cause serious fading, so until it’s been three months you need to be extra careful.

Why is my Tattoo Peeling?

Question: Why is my Tattoo Peeling and Flaking Off?Answer: Peeling and flaking of a new tattoo is perfectly normal. Before it actually begins to peel, the tattoo will look like it's covered with a whitish, cracking film. Then you'll see white or translucent flakes of old, dead skin start to peel off and some of the flakes may even contain some ink. Sometimes you can actually see a duplicate image of part of your tattoo peeling off - it's rather disconcerting, but it is also perfectly normal and there is no need to panic. It's a lot like a snake shedding its skin. Just add a little lotion (a LITTLE) to the tattoo to help keep it moist and encourage those flakes to come off. Do NOT scratch, pick or peel them. It will all be done in a few days and the color of your tattoo will start to return to normal. if(zSbL

Lower Back Tattoo and Epidurals

Answer: I had to look this one up because it was something I had never heard before when I was emailed this question back in 2003. Since then, it's come up a lot. PubMed apparently did some research on this theory and concluded that there are no conclusions and no proof to substantiate this theory. BME quickly dismisses this as an urban legend, but one pervasive enough that even doctors have been known to believe it. Tattooz.net's medical expert says, "The needle would go through the epidermis, dermis and into the areas where the anesthesia is infiltrated without difficulty", but wisely advises that anyone in this situation get personal professional advice from their own anesthesiologist.

Does that mean that some doctors won't still refuse to administer an epidural if the patient has a lower back tattoo? Unfortunately, no. As stated above, the belief that the practice is somehow dangerous - despite research and evidence to the contrary - is strong enough that even anesthesiologists have been known to err on the side of caution and refuse to attempt it. Note the following experience submitted by a reader:

"On Tuesday I delivered a baby girl, without any drugs. This was NOT my choice. Since this is baby number 3, I had decided I would 'treat' myself to an epidural this time and take the 'easy' route.

I made my intentions known to my labor and delivery nurse and together we decided when we would begin preparations for the drugs. All together, it took over an hour of preparation before they finally brought the anesthesiologist in.

At this point, I was dilated to 8 and running out of time and stamina. The pain was so intense and since I had my heart set on drugs, I had not mentally prepared myself for it. When the Dr. opened the back of my gown, they discovered my back tattoo. Up until this point, during my entire pregnancy, NO ONE ever asked if I had a tattoo. There are only three vertebrae where an epidural can be administered. They are L5, L4 and L3. This is also the exact location of the all popular 'back tat.' The Dr. explained to me that he would NOT be able to administer an epidural because the pigment could contain bacteria and he could not pierce the ink with a needle that could ultimately push the bacteria directly into my spinal fluid. Ultimately, this could introduce an infection that would jeopardize my mobility.

So, I had to deliver the baby on my own. It was a terrible experience, so I decided to research its validity which is how I came across your post. You may want to amend you post so women know the whole story before making the decision to get a lumbar tattoo. Had I known it would impact my delivery I would have made many different decisions. Obviously, it's too late when you are in the throws of labor." -Kimberly T.

I should mention a couple of points about the above email. First, most doctors won't administer an epidural this late in labor anyway. Once a woman has dilated to 8, it's usually too late. Second, what doctor decides to proceed with something like this without a full consultation to determine if the patient is, in fact, a good candidate for an epidural? The presence of the tattoo should have been established early on. And last but not least, I can say from experience that an epidural is no "treat" and is not always the "easy" way out. The one I got was a horrible experience and I will never opt for an epidural again.

My conclusion? As a mother of two, I can assure you that there are so many variables when having children that it is impossible to consider and prevent any possible difficulty. I also know that doctors have a knack for finding ways to provide for their patients, despite obstacles. They're not usually going to refuse pain relief to a woman in labor just because she has a lumbar tattoo, even if they believe in the above theory. And an epidural is not the only source of pain relief - there are other drugs that can ease the pain of childbirth. If you are unfortunate enough to end up with a doctor like the woman quoted above, I hope you have time to demand that someone else take over. A woman in labor deserves the utmost care, not a paranoid and superstitious doctor.

If a lower back tattoo is something you really want and this is the only thing standing in your way, you can always talk to your doctor about your concerns and see what they have to say on the matter. However, it appears to me that the chances of a lumbar tattoo actually interfering with an epidural or other pain relief is very, very minimal if not nil.

Celebrity Tattoo Buzz: All Doggs Go To Heaven

Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Rick Genest, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent all made the news this week for their connection with tattoos; some good, some....mmmm...not so much.

First, we have Miley Cyrus, who is reportedly planning tattoo number six (yes, apparently we are keeping count). Cyrus hasn't said what she's planning on getting this time; actually, it doesn't seem to matter to her what she gets, as long as she gets one. She's quoted as saying that she's addicted to the feeling of being inked and wants to get something before Easter. (Biting tongue)

50 Cent, who has been in the news for shedding most of his ink so that he can get more acting roles, is calling out fellow music artists for foolishly tattooing their faces with bizarre images such as Gucci Mane's ice cream cone and Yung L.A.'s duck. Yeah, it makes you stand out, he admits, but once your music career is over what do you have left? A stupid facial tattoo and an instant deterrent against finding "real" work.

Lady Gaga's making headlines for talking about her tattooed side - literally. I never noticed it before, but Lady Gaga's tattoos are all located on her left side, and now we find out that it's on purpose. Apparently, Gaga promised her daddy that she'd keep at least one side of herself "slightly normal." Well, you have to admire anyone who makes such a big sacrifice just to keep a parent happy. Personally, it would drive me batty to only have tattoos on one side of my body; I'd feel completely off balance!

Rick Genest, also known as "Zombie Boy" for his extensive zombie-like facial tattoos, has an interesting background and story as to how he was discovered. It's also been revealed that he only has one part of his body that isn't tattooed - wanna guess which part?

Last, but certainly not least, Snoop Dogg got some new ink in honor of his late friend, Nate Dogg, who passed away recently. Snoop and Nate were friends and fellow bandmates for many years, and his sudden passing at such a young age really his friends and fans hard. Snoop got a portrait tattoo of Nate along with the words, "All Doggs Go to Heaven."
